BEREAVEMENT AND LOSS

Have you lost someone recently?

Are you struggling to cope ?

Feeling alone with your thoughts and feelings ? That no-one understands ?

The first few weeks after someone dies can be a roller coaster of emotions which can effect our ability to function. Life can feel overwhelming.

This can also happen when we experience other types of loss too, such as the breakdown of a relationship, redundancy or the loss of a home. All these events involve change and most of us struggle with change.

Bereavement and loss can both cause many different symptoms and feelings such as

  • shock and numbness

  • overwhelming sadness and/or crying

  • tiredness or exhaustion

  • anger – towards the person you have lost or the reason for your loss

  • guilt – maybe around feeling angry, about something you said or did not say, or not being able to stop your loved one dying

  • anxiety

  • inability to concentrate or motivate yourself to do the things you would usually do

  • lack of sleep or recurring dreams/nightmares

  • worthlessness

HOW CAN COUNSELLING HELP?

After experiencing a bereavement or loss it can often be difficult talking to friends and family. You may worry about upsetting them, that they will not understand how you are feeling or you may have feelings that you do not want to share.
Counselling provides a confidential space to explore your thoughts and feelings and discuss life’s challenges in a supportive, non judgmental environment. It is an opportunity to feel heard, less alone, to process what’s going on for you and move towards a ‘ new normal ‘.
It will also help you gain a better understanding of yourself, your emotions and patterns of behaviour and can empower you to make better choices and decisions going forward.
